Do allow me a little “syiok sendiri” (loosely translated to “narcissistic”?) moment because look Ma! I’m in a beauty magazine! LOL Yes, it’s been a while, and no, it never gets old.

malaysian women's weekly magazine beauty insider

Thank you to The Malaysian Women’s Weekly for picking me as a “Malaysian Celeb” 😉 Hey, that’s what they say on the cover! “100 Beauty Brands Malaysian Celebs Love” so although I was categorised as a “Beauty Insider” (beauty blogger la 😛 ) I’m pretending I’m a celeb, just like everyone else featured (a celeb no one knows nor recognize LOL! But hey, I’m fine with that!)

If you’ve arrived here from MWW, welcome! I hope you enjoy your visit 🙂

Basically, MWW (Just 1 letter away from MWS – serendipity! 😛" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> ) asked if I could pick about 10 beauty products that I loved. They chose to feature 6 of my picks – yay! Regulars will be familiar with my picks because I’ve raved about them enough. You might even be sick of them (please don’t be. They are very good products! 😛" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> )

This is in the April 2017 edition of The Malaysian Women’s Weekly, if you’re interested and no, they unfortunately didn’t identify me as Paris B, but you should recognise the website, even if you don’t recognise my face nor name they used.

And speaking of favourite products, 3 out of 6 on my MWW list made it to my massive 10 years of MWS giveaway! And you’ll be pleased to know that I’ve FINALLY picked the 5 winners 🙂

I found The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% serum just … ordinary

Those of you who are in tune with the going ons in the skincare world would have come across The Ordinary – a somewhat ordinary sounding name of a new range of skincare that is so revolutionary, it’s pretty much rocked the world of skincare enthusiasts. It’s also received rave reviews online from many big names in the industry. The key reason is the price because products in The Ordinary range are very very affordably priced, for what is supposed to be very potent and effective ingredients. So affordably priced, it makes you wonder if there’s a catch.

Because they are the brainchild of the people behind Deciem, the other popular brand for effective products that don’t break the bank, I was more comfortable picking up a few pieces, sight unseen. I bought directly from the Deciem website although you can get The Ordinary in a few other places online (not retailed in Malaysia at time of publishing – please don’t ask. The info about product availability is always detailed in all my posts wherever I can, especially local availability where possible. However, I’m not a fan of product resellers or pre-orders or bulk buyers so I never recommend any. I’m all about buying directly from trusted sources, never from Instagram or Facebook and I suggest that you do the same /climbs off soapbox).

The first product I was most excited to try was The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% (I’ll call it The Ordinary Vitamin C serum for short) as I’d just run out of mine and was raring to try more Vitamin C products as I find them very effective.

The Ordinary Vitamin C serum slides in at under US$10 (£5) and I was curious as a cat with its 9 lives intact. There were so many raves for the brand online – might this be my wallet’s saviour?

Might reduced print ads from major beauty brands bring more brand variety to magazine content?

I was at the hairdresser during the week, which is where I get my fill of women’s magazines. I spend a lot of time online, and immersed in the world of beauty, but there is something still very calming and comforting about turning the pages of a glossy. While I don’t get my information about beauty products from magazines anymore, it’s still nice to see something you recognise in there.

But I also noticed something else quite glaring.

malaysia magazines

Like the pressure on women, magazines are getting thinner and thinner. This is a far cry from the days of yore, when magazines used to weigh a ton and a half, and resemble the telephone directory. Kids, you do know what a telephone directory looks like right? LOL 😛

That’s when it struck me – where are all the ads? 😯

When you achieve that highlight “on fleek” on a budget : 3 Wallet-friendly Highlighters

I showed you a very pretty but also pretty pricey highlighter last week that had everyone sighing wistfully. I’ve realised that many higher end brands like to produce limited edition highlighter powders that are beautifully designed and embossed. It must be the metallic shine that lends to an intricate design, and it is also more attention grabbing.

Yet, like many of you reading my blog I’m not terribly skilled at wearing highlighter (if you are, this is no insult, I promise!). The learning curve is less steep than learning to wear bronzer (you only risk looking like a metallic robot vs falling face first in cocoa powder) but there is a learning curve.

If you don’t quite feel up to dropping RM200 or more on a product you aren’t sure about, I have a few budget-friendly alternatives for you!

Highlighters perform the opposite function of bronzer or contouring products. You use a highlighter product on the high points of your face, where the light would hit to give the impression of light. Done in a subtle manner, you can create an illusion of higher cheekbones or a sharper nose, or just to give skin a subtle lit-from-within look. Overdo it, and hello, shiny robot 😛

I’m not personally crazy about using highlighter powders. I do tend to use blush that have a touch of shimmer or shine to them, so adding on more shine can be counter-productive. Also, I don’t necessarily work in an environment that will encourage you shining like a beacon LOL! 😀 But I keep the odd highlight powder on hand, because it’s useful, and hell, they’re pretty 😛

That said, I found a couple in my stash that I’d peg as being budget-friendly options that do a very good job. So, I wanted to share, especially if you’re interested to try a highlighter powder, without dropping the big bucks! 🙂

Spring continues to lighten and brighten in the Chanel Energies et Puretes makeup collection

I could apologise for coming in late with the limited edition Chanel Energies et Puretes le Blanc makeup 2017 collection. I could. But I won’t. I do wish brands would allow us consumers to catch our breath for a bit before throwing another large collection at us (and our wallets!)

chanel energies et puretes

I was sent some select pieces from the collection (else I’d never have known of its existence!) so I’ll do a quick post to show you what they are, and some quick thoughts on them, and if you’re truly interested, what I think is worth picking up (and what isn’t).

The Chanel Energies et Puretes collection is actually part of the le Blanc collection (whitening) and usually, this invokes brightness and light. But this is Lucia Pica, who has turned Chanel makeup on its head (in my view, and for the better!) so the collection isn’t what I’m used to seeing for a blanc collection, as it has all these beautiful bright shades interspersed with depth. I also found out that this collection has only just launched in the USA and parts of Europe (Asia usually gets the Whitening stuff first and exclusively), so if you’re interested, here are the items and my thoughts on them.
