I didn’t think a fragrance company would do skincare but the Jo Malone Vitamin E Gel surprised me

When I say Jo Malone, I dare bet that the first thing that comes to your mind is minimalistic tall square bottles of lovely fragrances, with an ivory label down the front. That’s the first thing to come to my mind, at any rate. I think pretty, light scents, wafting through the air.

I dare bet that skincare would not cross your mind. It never crossed mine!

So about a year ago (goodness, has it been that long?!) when this little jar of Jo Malone Vitamin E Gel landed on my desk, I did a double-take. Oh hello? What is this scorcery?

As it turned out, from browsing the Jo Malone store, I found out that they do do a small, select collection of Vitamin E facial skincare products. Not something that really jumps out at the consumer, nor is it something that you’d really be looking at, if I’m to be honest – their strength is in their fragrance range – but it is there. And if I might be so bold as to say so, this Vitamin E Gel is quite something.

I’m a little jaded with new makeup launches, but there’s one I’m quite looking forward to, and that’s the return of Clarins makeup to Malaysia. They may not be the most exciting makeup brand, but they make good makeup, sometimes with pretty powders, and that to me, is better than a bunch of mediocre and overhyped products being churned out every 2 weeks.

While we have a ways to go yet (I think it’s expected on our shores in July or September – I can’t recall which. But we’ll see it eventually) Clarins has dropped 2 limited edition makeup products that you can check out right now. It’s being released for Mother’s Day that’s coming up very soon so if you’re thinking of getting something for Mom (or for yourself – really, who’s counting?!) you can consider these.

They are the Clarins Skin Illusion Blush and the Clarins Daily Energizer Lovely Lip Balm, both of which are limited edition and available while stocks last at counters and on the website, for those of you who prefer shopping online (like me!) 🙂

Their release in line with Mother’s Day is apt, considering the love and kisses design, and it is also quite user-friendly for those who struggle with wearing makeup. Let me run them both down for you and you’d be glad to know that they both slip in comfortably under RM100! 🙂

SKINCARE TIP: Use Facial Oil as a mask for a one step lazy day skincare routine

I’ve got a quick skincare tip for you today, which is one that forms the central part of my lazy day skincare routine. Oh yes, I get those, and as diligent as I am with my skincare, there are days when I just want to vege out. You know those days? When even spritzing on a facial mist seems like too much effort.

Yet, you don’t feel right not putting on your evening face – the layers of lotions and potions. Some days I power through the malaise. Other days, I cheat 😉

Well, I’ll share with you what I do in this instance. You only need 2 ingredients (faster than baking a cake!).

Searching for the Extraordinary in The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% and Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed oil

My first experience with The Ordinary skincare left me feeling wanting. I guess I had a lot of high hopes for it, due to the affordability and the strength of the company behind it, and also due to the raves it’s been getting all over the world.

One of the products that I know many people love and which I was urged to try was The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2%. I bought this way back when I did my The Ordinary haul, because I was curious about adding a retinol product into my skincare routine, and this was affordable. I also bought The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil, because I had very good results from the Pai Bioregenerate Rosehip Oil, and this was more affordable, so I wanted to see if it would be a good replacement.

I’d put both of these into my routine over quite a long period, which you’ll understand why below, and I think I’ve finally reached a conclusion.

If you want the short answer, I’m going to be that party pooper, throwing cold water all over everyone, and telling you that I’m afraid that whatever I’ve tried from The Ordinary so far just doesn’t work for me. If you want to read about how I worked it out, then read on.

It isn’t to say of course, that I dislike the brand. I’ve nothing against them. I just haven’t found anything to work, which isn’t to say of course, that it won’t work for you.

You are your best benchmark – Love the skin you’re in, not covet someone else’s skin

I often come across tips or clickbait style titles in magazines that profess to tell you “How to get {insert celebrity du jour}’s skin!” with a list of products that said celebrity says she uses. I also sometimes have people ask me how to get skin like mine, which isn’t even great skin to start with. You don’t really want my skin, trust me LOL!

And I’m going to tell you this. It bugs me. It bugs me a whole lot.

love the skin you're in

My beef with this way of thinking, is this. There is no way that you can get another person’s skin. Not unless you scalp them, in which case the skin is pretty much useless to you anyway (gory yes? 😛 ) I know that’s looking at it literally, but even if you think about it from an abstract point of view, you can’t get your skin to look like anyone else’s skin. If you’re looking for skincare tips, you really shouldn’t be looking to get someone else’s skin, but instead, to use those tips to get a better version of YOUR OWN skin.

Falling in love with the Skin Creamery Facial Hydrating Oil and granting it permanent residence on my dresser

I have a sneaky suspicion that I might have just found another skincare brand that can do me no wrong. Or at least, do me little wrong. (You already know the other one) Incidentally, it is another fairly niche natural and organic skincare brand. Might this be a new trend for me?

The odd thing also, is that this new skincare brand I’m currently a little more than enamoured with, also hails from the Southern Hemisphere. Hmm curiouser and curiouser!

The brand in question is Skin Creamery, which hails from South Africa. My first encounter with it was through the Everyday Cream that you can use on face and body, and it really impressed me. I still use it, although as a hand and body cream more than a face cream these days. That said, now and again, I use it for a basic moisturiser, and it’s all good.

The second thing I tried out was the Skin Creamery Facial Hydrating Oil. Ah, facial oils! I took a while getting around to this, but the moment I put it on my skin, I knew I was onto a winner and it’s now taken up permanent residence on my dresser! 😀
