Growing Older: How I perceive the age issue in the beauty scene and blogging

I’ve noticed rumblings in recent times that older women are feeling left out or sidelined by the beauty industry, despite having money to spend. These are women who are in their late 30’s and up. I actually do feel that way as well. When I hit my 30’s and now in my 40’s I might as well have one foot in the grave and walk out without a scrap of makeup, and clad in a burlap sack, as far as the fashion and beauty scene is concerned, because that seems to be the perception.

But we know that isn’t true is it? I love my skincare, and I still love my blush and my lipstick and foundations. I love my makeup and I love my beauty. But the industry doesn’t love me back does it?

Instead, it targets new launches at the young. Anti-aging serums and creams bear the faces of 20-somethings, and are promoted by young girls who don’t need them yet, and who won’t use them. Lipstick caters for their preferences – matte for now, or metallic – leaving those of us who prefer cream or satin textures a little out in the cold.

Yet, I understand the push to market to the young. They are at an impressionable age and ready to experiment, and may not yet know what they want. Also, when you’re young, there is a desire to fit in and maybe to embrace a trend. By the time you reach my age, you’d (hopefully) have more or less figured out what you like, and are more secure and more confident in your choices. I’m told women in their late 30’s and up are less likely to experiment very widely, which is why beauty marketing targets the younger crowd and uses faces the young can relate to.

So, what is a 40-something blogger or consumer to do?

The premium skincare range of Shiseido Future Solution LX is a treat to indulge your senses

More than a month back, I was taken on a lovely pampering treat day by Shiseido, to indulge my 5 senses and to introduce the Shiseido Future Solution LX range of skincare. They celebrated the the sense of taste at the exquisite lunch at Nobu, the sense of sight taking in the beautiful candlelight decoration at the Ritz-Carlton, the sense of touch at the pampering Yutaka treatment facial, the sense of hearing with the special music created specially for this facial and the sense of smell in the specially formulated fragrance in the Shiseido Future Solution LX range of skincare.

It was a day I thoroughly enjoyed, and I almost immediately put the Shiseido Future Solution LX range into use. I had a full range of products, so I decided to use it all together as I was told it would perform best this way.

The reason I was so keen to put it into immediate use was because I walked out of the brief facial with skin that looked ethereal. Pores were tiny. Skin was glowy and fresh. I was so impressed by the Shiseido Yutaka Treatment facial that I’m going to try the full session at their salon soon. It was that impressive!

But I also wanted to see if I could achieve this beautiful glow to the skin at home. So, I’ll walk you through each of the products in the Future Solution LX range and tell you what I think 🙂

This Senka Mineral UV Essence SPF50+ PA++++ Sunscreen was so cheap I had to see if it was any good for me!

I recently found out that the price of my favourite sunscreen has gone up again. This troubles me and my wallet, because sunscreen is something I don’t skimp on in terms of use, and something I run through quite quickly. Often, when I make this lament, I’m requested to try something cheaper. Often, one brand that pops up quite frequently, is Senka. Incidentally, Senka is one of the drugstore brands under the Shiseido umbrella.

One day, when I was at a Watson’s store, I noticed that Senka products were on sale. They had a few different types of sunscreen on offer, but I noticed one called the Senka Mineral UV Essence SPF50+ PA++++.

I included the packaging in this shot so you know what it looks like. I find that pharmacy brands tend to have different packaging or more simplistic packaging, and that can sometimes make it harder to identify a product. This is more so when the tube itself is very plain, with everything on it written in Japanese. Without the backing card, I’d have no idea what it says!

The real reason I picked up the Senka Mineral UV Essence sunscreen is because it boasts high UVA and UVB protection, while promising a light texture and more importantly, only set me back a mere RM20 (US$5). I. KID. YOU. NOT! OK, it was on sale. But it regularly retails for RM39.90 (under US$10) for 50g. Hey, it was worth an experiment! 😀

The jumbo crayons in Chanel Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur range will help you colour within the lines

Crayon-style lipsticks have been around for a while, and you and I know that. But it doesn’t stop me from craning my neck at the next new one to hit the counters, because I happen to quite enjoy using these sort of lip products. I’m less enamoured with the ones I have to sharpen than I am with retractable crayon versions.

I read about the Chanel Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur lipsticks months before they became available here in Malaysia. When I first enquired, I was told that strangely, we were only getting ours later in the year as opposed to other countries who got theirs earlier. So there are many many posts out about it now, if you want to read a different viewpoint!

Now, you can say that Chanel is a little late to the party. Crayon lipsticks have been done over and over ad nauseum from department store brands to pharmacy/drugstore brands. But release one they did, anyway! I like that – it’s like Chanel just said, “Hey, we know this is something that’s done to death, but let’s just do it anyway!”

To be fair to them, they did do a pretty good job of the Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur lipsticks. But there were one or two things I felt might have made these excellent as opposed to just good 🙂

Can fragrance in skincare make your skin sensitive? How can you tell if it does?

Original Full Post is found here: Can fragrance in skincare make your skin sensitive? How can you tell if it does?

Time was, whenever I was faced with a product targeted at “sensitive skin”, I’d just smile politely and move on. I was convinced (not without reason) that my skin was not sensitive. And to a large extent, there was some truth in that.

Generally speaking, I do not have what is conventionally referred to as “sensitive skin”. My skin does not get irritated easily, and I do not suffer from eczema or most skin problems (for which I am very thankful!). I have older, more matured skin than most of you reading this, I warrant, and I am plagued by the problems associated with age – hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity, dry skin – and I target those concerns in my skincare regimen.

While I now take the trouble to look at the ingredient list on a skincare product, I’d never quite thought about how fragrance reacts with my skin, despite reading a lot of literature telling me that it can sensitize skin or aggravate sensitive skin. I have friends who tell me they cannot use a certain product that I might enjoy, because the fragrance in the product irritates their skin. I never quite understood it. Sorry guys 😛

But recently, I had an experience that drove the point home for me. Fragrance in skincare, in copious amounts in my case, can indeed lead to skin sensitivity! Do you experience the same?

My Skincare Routine September 2017 : Use it up or lose it! Products I have emptied

I shared my skincare routine last in August 2017, and said I’d make it a more regular segment here on the blog, if only for my personal reference, to remind myself of what works (and what doesn’t). What you may notice is that while the products will switch around and change from time to time, the structure of my routine remains pretty much the same, which is what makes it a “routine”.

In August, I was all about calming down my skin that was feeling sensitive. By September, my skin was calm and zen, and I was ready to play around again. But I set myself a goal.

I had a bunch of skincare that were either on their last legs, or almost expired, and I gave myself a challenge of either using them up, or tossing them out.

Happily, I ended up using up and emptying quite a few items, which made me very happy. I know it is odd to be happy about emptying a skincare product (I should be sad, as it means I have to purchase something to fit its missing hole in my routine) but I have other similar products waiting in line to take its place, and I was excited to have a go at them! 😀 #beautyjunkieproblems

So, here’s my skincare routine in September 2017 including what I’d finished, and I’ll tell you if I’ll repurchase them 🙂 Feel free to share your thoughts, or even your routine with me! I’m a nosy parker 😀
