Gonna be honest about the new Clarins Extra-Firming creams range. I wasn’t expecting very much. I don’t remember ever trying their previous version, but that’s water under the bridge, because Clarins has just released their newly reformulated Extra-Firming cream range with 5 different variants to suit different skin types. How about that for dedication to customization!

Why wasn’t I prepared to like this one? Well, not because it’s not any good – on the contrary, Clarins skincare products are pretty effective and generally well-formulated.

The primary reason was due to the fragrance. Like most French skincare brands, Clarins products tend to fall on the side of being over-fragranced. While my skin is not too bothered, my nose is. I’m just a little more sensitive that way. The secondary reason is texture. I tend to be troubled by the heavier, silicone feel of many department store creams out there.

And that was how I felt during the launch of the Clarins Extra-Firming creams about 2 months ago. Still, in the spirit of experimentation, I dug into the creams. And much to my surprise, they’ve really grown on me! 😀

The Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint was not love at first sight but I gave it a second chance for happy ever after!

I tend to take my time trying out products, which frustrates people who ask me what I think of a product the minute I show a new purchase. I can never tell them! LOL! The reason, as this Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint will show, is because sometimes, I like giving things a second chance, if they don’t wow me off the bat. This one didn’t.

I bought this one quite a while ago, because I came across quite a few online raves for it and fell for it like the little sheep I am LOL! 😀 But when I received it, I wasn’t too charmed by it.

The primary reason was because I wasn’t sure what exactly it was. The name Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint implies that it should be just a tint of colour on the skin. So I was expecting something light and sheer. Yet, when squeezed out of the tube, it was thick in texture, quite dry and fairly opaque. I was very confused so I set it aside.

I came back to it now and again, but never really took to it. It wasn’t until fairly recently, that I rediscovered it in my foundation drawer, decided to have another go, and suddenly, I was in love with it! 😀 It comes down to technique and expectations.

What skincare and makeup recommendations have not worked for you? Or 5 reasons you shouldn’t believe everything you read

don't believe everything you read about skincare

As someone who loves sharing thoughts about the good (and bad) stuff out there, I often run up against people who’d agree wholeheartedly with my recommendations, or toss brickbats at me because they don’t agree with my views. I see it happening to everyone and really, I am not surprised. Some are just more polite and better behaved than others.

don't believe everything you read about skincare
In fact, I’d suggest that people not blindly follow online product or skincare routine recommendations, just because a blogger or a social media influencer endorses or shares about it. There is more you should be thinking about than just how much it costs.

Here are just 5 reasons why skincare and makeup recommendations will not work for you, and why you really should be taking ALL product recommendations with a pinch of salt 🙂 Yes, even mine! I’m very realistic 🙂

Acid Toners: What are acid toners? Why Do you need them and why I have stopped using Acid Toners

what are acid toners

This post about acid toners is one that’s long coming. It was a little hard for me to write, for a few reasons. The primary reason is because I have to suck it up, swallow my pride and admit that I wasn’t entirely correct in pursuing the skincare regimen that I was pursuing.

what are acid toners

About 4 years ago, I discovered exfoliating lotions, or what are also known as “acid toners”. These are toning lotions that contain acids, usually in the form of glycolic acid, lactic acid (AHA) and/or salicylic acid (BHA). I primarily stuck to lotions containing AHA – Alpha Hydroxy Acids.

Fast forward 3 years later, after finding and using one of the best in the market, I now use acid toners quite sparingly, compared to before. It isn’t because they’re no good. But I’ve learnt more about my skin in that time, and I hope to be able to help you decide if acid toners are for you 🙂

Tell you what? I think the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Recovery Mask-in-Oil is better than the ANR serum!

What if I told you that I’ve found a product that is not only better than my favourite little brown bottle by Estee Lauder, but that it can actually last you longer therefore delivering better value? Intrigued? You should be!

It is the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Recovery Mask-in-Oil, and as the name implies, comes within the same family. Like its older sibling, it comes in a little brown bottle. What distinguishes it is the slightly more transparent colour of the bottle.

Regulars will know that I’m a big fan of the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum. It has helped my skin over the years, and even now, I have a little bottle of it on my dresser. I dip into it every now and then, primarily because my choices are wider now than before, but it remains a skincare stalwart.

For me then to be blown away by the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Recovery Mask-in-Oil, should not come as a surprise. For one, it’s part of the ANR family, and that automatically endears me to the product (only the cleanser received a bit of critique from me thus far and that’s not due to its performance). But more interestingly, the idea of a mask and oil intrigued me.
