Does 7 days with the Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster leave me glowing?

Some of you may know about my current “obsession” with Vitamin C serums ever since I finished my favourite Vitamin C serum. It was eye-wateringly expensive, but it worked so well for me. I’ve been toying with the idea of repurchasing, but at the same time, wanted to try something new.

So, when I stumbled across the Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C 10% I did a double take. I hounded Clinique before its availability here in Malaysia because I was so bloody curious. You would be too, if I tell you that it comes in 1 week vials. Say what?

The thing is, Clinique came out with 2 different packaging for this, and I understood why the moment I saw the price. Oh yes, the full set was pretty eye-watering.

The Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Vitamin C 10% (let me just call it the Fresh Pressed Daily Booster) comes in a pack of 4, for use over 4 weeks. It also comes as a 1 week option, with 7 days worth of the complementary Fresh Pressed Renewing Powder Cleanser.

I was all ready to spring for the full 1 month version, but to be honest, couldn’t justify the price. Locally it retails at RM315 for the full size option (yes, I had to pick my jaw off the floor as well. It’s not a price I’m used to seeing at Clinique) so, although I was sceptical, I dug deep and sprung for the Fresh Pressed 7 Day System, to see what I could discern from it.

Those of you on the MWS Companion newsletter list would have recently been asked to give me some motivation to get off my butt and move it, move it! I’m very bad at sticking to any form of exercise routine, simply because I get bored, or there’s always something else more interesting to do… that involves me sitting around on my butt.

But as I’ve also told you early in the year, I’ve taken up swimming again. The problem with swimming however (I can always find a problem, trust me) is that it gets boring doing laps. Unlike running or gym work, you can’t listen to anything while you swim. Or can you?

Introducing the Underwater Audio Waterproof Swimbuds Earphones and Syryn Waterproof MP3 player for use in the pool! I was offered by Underwater Audio to try these and see how I liked them, and truth be told, I leaped at the opportunity. Here was the answer to my pool boredom! Or so I hoped!

Step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve flawless base makeup, with expert tips by Felix Nguyen of Bobbi Brown

If there’s one thing I particularly love about blogging and what I do, is the incredible opportunities I’ve had to meet with, talk to, and pick the brains of makeup artists, skincare founders and experts in the industry. It never gets old for me, and there’s always something new to learn. It’s no secret that I love prying behind and digging deep into the different aspects of beauty, makeup and skincare, and I love it when some brands recognise that and give me the opportunity to do so (for better or for worse).

Recently, during the official launch of the new Bobbi Brown store at Pavilion KL (now on the 3rd Floor) I had the opportunity to catch up with one of my favourite makeup artists out there – Felix Nguyen, Regional Education & Artistry Manager of Bobbi Brown Asia-Pacific, who I unfortunately ambushed with a few hard questions about the brand. Oops! To his credit, he didn’t get flustered, and was quite open to share. The other pro makeup artist I love is Junior CedeΓ±o of Dior, who single-handedly changed and cemented my foundation application technique for life.

It helps that they’re both hot (eye-candy helps you concentrate πŸ˜›" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> ). Unlike many makeup artists I’ve met, who are a little more distant and sometimes more aloof, Felix is friendly, and as generous with his makeup and skincare tips as he is with his boyish grins. Ok, I promise I’ll stop simpering after this πŸ˜›" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />

So, while I was there, Felix did a little base makeup demonstration and I love learning new things about base makeup, so I was taking down copious notes. Since some of you on Instagram were so kind to compliment me on my generosity with sharing knowledge, I decided I’d be generous again this time. Ahem πŸ˜›

But here’s the rub. As a friend and I observed, while being back-benchers for the day, hiding behind the crowd who were there, mostly to get up close with the cute makeup artist (oops! there I go again!), the model had great skin to start with. Naturally, the thin layers of makeup, as Felix was explaining should be used, combined with his expert skills, would render her flawless without too much effort. How about picking one of us mortals, who have blemishes and all, instead? πŸ˜›

I was thinking about that, as I was writing up my post about the base makeup tips I’d picked up. So I decided I’d do you a step-by-step, to show you how he demonstrated how you can get a flawless base, but I’d use me – imperfections and all, and my rudimentary non-makeup artist skills. I really wanted to see if his tips would work for those of us at home, so I only attempted this once as you see here – without a lot of expectations πŸ˜€ It could have gone remarkably wrong.

I’m loving the EX1 Invisiwear Liquid Foundation and it absolutely lives all the way up to its hype!

I’d never heard of EX1 Cosmetics. Ever. I think it was one of those brands that’s been popularized through social media (particularly Instagram) and it was one of those that slipped through my radar (I’m not really on the ball despite what you might think LOL!) I only really looked at it, because my friend Romana used to rave about their foundation. I was curious. Naturally!

When the opportunity arose, I decided to get myself a bottle, to see what the hype was about. It’s not very expensive, which is always a good thing and aids experimentation πŸ™‚

I still don’t know much about the brand, but I’ve since learned that the EX1 Invisiwear Liquid Foundation is very popular and gets a lot of raves, because it is designed for those with yellow or olive undertones. Not having very significantly yellow or olive undertones myself, it was something I honestly can’t grasp but I know I count myself among the lucky ones when it comes to foundation. I can usually find a shade in most brands.

So EX1 Invisiwear Liquid Foundation – is it worth having a go at it sight unseen? πŸ™‚

Why Sheet Masks are like Fast Food or Why I have stopped using Sheet Masks so often

“Sheet masks are like fast food.” ~ Paris B

I’m not sure how this statement I’m making is going to be perceived, so it’ll be interesting to know your take, as it is a statement I’ve found myself making more often recently.

sheet masks are like fast food

I’m not trying to be deliberately provocative, nor am I slamming the use of sheet masks. Quite many years ago, I wrote about why I or you might want to use a sheet mask (before the explosion of Korean brand masks hit the market), and much of what I wrote 7 years ago still holds true today.

I was using sheet masks from way back, when the market was primarily dominated by Japanese and Taiwanese brands. Today, you can’t move for the availability of affordable and easy to find sheet mask brands, many of which I notice are made popular by Korean brands. Anyone who talks about K-beauty will inevitably talk about the sheet masks they use, how often they use them and how lovely they are. When I visited Seoul quite many years ago, my luggage when I returned, was filled with sheet masks from different brands because they were so affordable to buy in bulk. I could have set up shop, if I had been more enterprising LOL!

Yet over the years, I’ve found myself using sheet masks less and less. I’m not sure that I ever finished my Korean stash; and the primary reason why I’m no longer into using sheet masks is the same reason I try to cook my own food when I can – sheet masks feel too much like fast food.

Affordable & Effective doesn’t get much better than the Hada Labo Hydrating Cream with A.C.E Boosting Capsule

If there’s one problem I have with Hada Labo products, it’s that I never know what to call them. This cream is a good example. I can’t tell if it’s called the Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Cream with A.C.E Boosting Capsule or the Hada Labo Gokujyun Hydrating Cream with A.C.E Boosting Capsule or just Hada Labo Gokujyun Cream as it says on the tub. I’m sure the name is far more elegant in Japanese – in English, it’s a mess. Sort it out Hada Labo!

Confusing name aside, I’m still going to rave about this cream moisturiser, because I think it’s very nice, very effective and it’s above all, affordable! I think you’ve started to realise by now, what a big fan of Hada Labo I am LOL! πŸ˜› For me, when it comes to pharmacy or drugstore skincare, I find that Hada Labo ticks most of the boxes, being importantly, effective and affordable. I can’t say the same for many other brands.
