Thinking back on the year that was as we head into a brand new year

Dear friends,

I don’t know about you, but for me, I feel like 2017 has started to fizzle out a bit. It feels rather like a defective firework. All whizzbang at first, and suddenly fizzling out in a rather embarrassing manner. My 2017 seems to be slinking off, its tail between its legs, as we approach the new year. It makes a good change from it kicking me in my rear the past two years! LOL!

year end musings

I tend to get a little pensive at this time of year, as most people do. We get a little reflective about how we feel the year has gone by, and we are a little apprehensive of what’s to come. On balance, 2017 has been quite a year for me, as I’m sure it has been for you 🙂

Do you get the benefits of a face mask in just 15 seconds with the Blithe Splash Mask?

I came across mention of a “splash mask” online not very long ago. Someone I knew swore by how wonderful it was. When I checked recently, said someone was onto another skincare trend. So I don’t know really! Korean skincare routines have thrown up many different routines and products that do not necessarily work for me, so I have tended to not pay a lot of attention.

But one day, when I was browsing Sephora, I made an odd Sephora purchase – the Blithe Patting Water Pack, or Blithe Splash Mask, whichever you want to call it. The former is the formal name. The latter is what everyone calls it.

The reason I picked is up is purely due to curiosity. It was a pretty expensive purchase on a whim, but I was curious. How does it work and do you really just literally splash it on?!

There are 3 different types, I believe, but I bought the Blithe Splash Mask – Energy Yellow Citrus & Honey version, which is supposed to be for toning up and revitalizing the skin. Goodness knows, I could do with some of that! But how did I fare with it?

Give also the gift of play to refugee children this gift-giving season with The Body Shop Play for Peace gift sets

One of the companies which releases the biggest, most varied selection of Christmas gift sets is The Body Shop. They have quite literally something for every budget, and what’s nice is that they attach a cause to the gifting process. Last year, it was about saving the animals.

This year, in view of what’s been happening around the world, their focus is on our next generation – the children.

This year, with every seasonal gift you buy from The Body Shop, TBS will donate to the International Alert’s Peace Play Project. The Peace Play Project helps Syrian refugee children in Lebanon heal through therapeutic play, and perhaps, just for a few minutes, forget the horrors of war and strife that they’ve lived through, through daily play.

Proceeds from the sale of each gift will go towards funding the Peace Play Project for a year, and you can read more about this initiative here. This is an international initiative, and since you’d be buying a gift anyway, it is a good time to give towards a noble cause as well. The Peace Play Project initiative aside, what I’ve found more interesting about The Body Shop’s gift sets this year, is their packaging.

I’ve never used a clay cleanser so I was surpried that the L’Oreal Pure Clay Cleanser did not strip my skin

I’m going to preface this by saying that I’m not sure if/when the L’Oreal Pure Clay Cleansers are/will be available here in Malaysia. I was told they’ve been sighted at KLIA, but I could be mistaken. So, if you know, let us all know!

I got these through a friend in Australia, where these, as well as the popular L’Oreal Pure Clay masks are sold. I’ll talk about the masks another day. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the cleansers, because I’d never used a clay cleanser before, and because I thought they were pretty decent for the price! Provided of course, your skin can tolerate them 🙂

Note to myself (and to you): Stop hoarding your skincare and USE IT!

The problem for everyone, when you develop an interest in a subject like beauty or skincare, is the tendency to go overboard. I attribute this to FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out. A real concern.

Sure, we say we are interested, and we are restrained, but in actual fact, we aren’t. We proclaim we love a product, and then we say in the next breath “I need a back up!” Youtubers and Instagrammers don’t help. They show off their full cupboards and their “shelfies” and they tell you “I need a backup!” and “Look at all my beautiful storage systems” And we run out and buy a back up, and we build our own shelfies. And we see a sale happen. And we buy new items to try, or a back up. And we look at our beauty cabinet with pride, and think “Ah, I have a wonderful stash of products!”

I have news for you – STOP!

stop hoarding skincare

I am not immune to FOMO myself. I am not ashamed to confess this. I have said this year, that I have scaled back on my beauty purchases substantially, when compared to previous years. The reason was because I had built up a substantial stash, and I wanted to try to make a dent in my stash.

I did quite well till towards the year end, when the sales began, and my roving eye picked out new products and skincare brands I was interested to try, that had finally come online. All resolve flew out the window!

But something happened to me, that knocked sense back into my skull. Stop hoarding. Stop buying new stuff. Stop owning back ups. Just stop!

The Bobbi Brown Luxe Eyeshadow raises my temperature like Liquid Mercury and shines on skin like a kiss from a Metal Rose

I’m not quite sure where I first saw the Bobbi Brown Luxe Eyeshadow singles. It could have been online, where I get most of my beauty news. I don’t usually go for single eyeshadow, but for reason, I was taken by these.

There was very little information online for some reason. It was not until I read about them launching in the UK in December 2017 that I hoofed down to a local Bobbi Brown counter to have a look. That was when I found out that locally, they had been out for a month or two! (Based on what the SA told me) Uh… what?! And about half the shades were already sold out.

WHAAAAT??? In my exact words “How can?!”

But can lor… I had a lovely girl helping me, so I had a play with the colours that were available. These single eyeshadow come beautifully packaged in a square case, and a gold cover. You cannot depot them, as there is no pan. I found this out, as one of the shadows in store popped out of its case.

The Bobbi Brown Luxe Eyeshadow is supposed to be a new formula, boasting a luxe, metallic, iridescent texture. They come in 3 textures – Rich Lustre (satin formula but with a sparkle), Rich Metal (a metallic foil effect) and Rich Sparkle (a brilliant sparkly shine).

What you can expect from these shadows, across the board, are shine. If you prefer matte formulas, please look away. There is nothing for you here. You must enjoy eyeshadow with a shine. It just depends on how shiny you like them! 😀
